The Central Plateau - Late
Summer 2009
Bob
took these photos standing at the top of the central plateau.
This is the
beautiful, flat apple tree area that will be our primary backyard.
You are looking southeast. On the left is the sunny part of the
driveway you rode on. The gravel had been extended up the mud
slope so we could drive to the plateau. This was back when we
were working on Plan A. The blue dot is a chair where we expected
to put a mobile home. We spent a lot of time sitting in our yard
chairs, just listening and looking around.
You are looking south, straight down onto our backyard. It is
easy to see the tire tracks across the plateau. The far end of
the field slants down and right, into the toe of a boot. That is
the lower plateau from the previous group of photos.
This is southwest. You see Bob’s car and behind it the tractor
that mowed all of this. The ground was getting steeper and too
rough to drive the car any further up. The land was overgrown
with waist to shoulder high weeds, bushes, and saplings when we bought
it.
You are looking
northwest, up into the forest where the house will be. The sun
shines through because this area was timbered 25 years ago. The
thin, young trees made it easier to clear.

Still looking north-northwest. There were some dead trees from a
small fire started by lightning many years ago. That also sped up
the clearing process. We already have a lightning rod to go along
our roof ridge.
Looking north is another of the many farm roads we have. This one
goes way up to the top of our property, nearly 1200 feet
elevation. Bob is standing at about 975 feet. The
topographical maps show some nice flat spots along the way up.
Some day (dreaming again) we would like to put covered benches on
them. Luckily we have many years to do all of this. This is
another area where we sat in our yard chairs with a drink and a snack
just getting to know our surroundings and communing with nature.
Just past the farm road, this area has also been cleared to become the
house site. The new driveway to the house site now comes up here,
just right of the farm road.
